Ms. Perez has 31 years of experience in public education. She taught high school English and directed student dramatic productions, and adult literacy classes for seven years in New Jersey before coming to Waco, Texas. During her 24 years in Waco, all at University High School, she taught English, reading, Peer Assistance and Leadership, (PALs) and directed the drill team, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders, and sponsored senior classes for fifteen years. She was selected Campus Outstanding Teacher in 1990. Ms. Perez also was the Instructional Facilitator, assistant principal, and served for four years as principal of UHS. In addition, she has written curriculum for the Newark, NJ public school system and the City University of New York with the training division of the Prudential Insurance Company.
