Classroom Management Tips for Teachers
Teachers often become frustrated with the day to day management of student behavior. Behavior management can be time consuming and takes away from precious and valuable instructional time. Because of the frustrations many teachers resort to punitive consequences. Many of the consequences used are ineffective because students become accustomed to adults setting limits on the behavior. For example they know that if the talking becomes too loud, the teacher will address it. In a self managed environment the student will catch themselves and stop the talking without adult intervention. The goal of managing behavior should be to address the behavior in a manner that encourages self monitoring and management. A few ways that teachers might encourage and promote self management are :
1.Identify expected behaviors early in the school year and teach those expected behaviors to all students
2.Establish a positive reinforcement system that reinforces the desired behavior
3. Invest time and energy in letting students know when they are "getting it right"
4.State classroom rules/expectations using positive measurable statement
5.Address misbehavior briefly and calmly
6. Impose consequences without showing emotions
